Trail of Two Cities 2009

I love this race, just LOVE it.  It’s the only time they close the Route 52 Causeway between Ocean City and Somers Point for runners & walkers, & the views are stunning.

I’ve run this race in 2006 & 2007, and was seriously pissed last year when I couldn’t get out of work on time to make it to the start.  This year, I wasn’t going to let a lingering cough stop me.

Besides, I’m supposed to keep up the intensity & just cut back on volume during taper.  I think.  And I’d cut WAAAAY back on volume during the past week (ZERO miles run, zero miles on the bike, zero meters in the pool), so I didn’t think a little 5k would hurt.

I foist the still sick kids on my bewildered husband (yes honey I’m still coughing, yes honey it’s 30 degrees outside, but yes honey I really want that long sleeve cotton tee) & head off.

For the first mile, my legs feel really odd after having not run the entire week then trying to put some semblance of speed on them.  Odd like disembodied & rubbery.  My legs eventually recover, but then I make the mistake of chatting with someone right after we hit the top of the first bridge – this induces a coughing spell & I thought my airway was going to close up on me.

I didn’t push as hard as I have in the past – I could hear the cold air whistling down my constricted airway the whole time, & I didn’t bring my albuterol.  I was very pleasantly surprised to come in only 10 seconds above my 5k PR

I wish I had taken pictures - the views were breathtaking – it was a beautiful windless morning that made it an absolute pleasure to run this course.  If they had let us run this course back & forth a few times I would have – it’s just that gorgeous.

Without pushing and only 10 seconds above. The training plan starts to pay-back, I see you very well for your next marathon. I keep on reading you from Spain.

Dang--you're sick and haven't run for a week and only missed your PR by 10 seconds? You've gotten speedy, missy. What's your secret?

And if it's getting sick and not running, forget it. I'm trying that right now and it ain't doing shit for me.

only 10 sec over your PR when you're still recovering!! Nicely done!

it looks gorgeous! great job!

You have some taper magic, to take it fairly easy, while sick, and be so close to a PR! You're set up for a great big race!

Rest must do the body good! Bring on that marathon!

What? I thought 5ks were beneath you. I kid, I kid :)

That was a great effort, and you weren't even at 100%. Congrats on a great race!

Nice. It always feels good to run well even though you had a ton of reasons that any other runner would have used to take the day off, or to jog. I think everyone would agree that this means a healthy you is in 5k PR shape

NIce job! I'm jealous. I'm recovering from a similar ailment and it's all I can do to stay below a 10 minute pace.

You rock!

Looks like a gorgeous run! Makes me really miss living by the water. :( Congrats on a great time...still sick and only 5 sec from your PR? Wow!

I won't get into the fact that you forgot your albuterol, but really now?????
Congrats on the race, PR's come and go, you at least have another fine piece of cotton to hang in the closet! I love doing races for the shirts!
Feel better!

Congrats on scoring a Popener, cheater.

Now make with the @$$ pix, or the Deal You Struck With Satan to win the contest will backfire so hideously that it will make a mockery of your cheating win. Like, he'll make your @$$ so hideous and non-killah that you wouldn't be able to give a picture of it away ... even on hideousfauxlipina@$$es.org.

(The "org" doesn't stand for what you think it does. Unless you think it stands for something nasty. In which case you are correct.)

Now imagine, having made my point, I go on for an addition 4,700 or so words.

seriously - sick, no running, and 10 secs off your pr. hello speed! no more excuses :)

i agree though, that shirt is always worth it - even if it means developing pneumonia, no biggie.

Impressive running when sick. But we runners are stubborn like that too. Good job in the race.

PR and a sickO? Nice job. Any day is a good day for a PR.

Only 10 seconds behind your PR while having coughing spells. Not bad!! Do another in a few months and you get a new PR for sure.

Amanda said...

Great job, you totally would have had a PR had you been feeling well I bet!

Nice results! Now I have to question why you raced before you recovered, but I guess it's only 3.1, right?

Nice job on the race - way to get it in with all the sickness going on.

Classy move. Using Runner Tammy's site to push Teh Popener in my face. Some Catholic you are!

But remember what Jebus said in his German on teh Kraut:

Ffff! Ffff! Testing ... testing ... Is this thing on?

*Ahem* Ah- ah- ah-CHOOO! O, Me bless Me! Sorry! Anyone got a towel? I think I gobbed on this mic a bit ...

Yeah, he wasn't much of a public speaker.

But what he MEANT was:

Blessed are teh Popenerless, for Teh Kingdom of Beer will be theirs.

So I win. (Unless by "kingdom of beer" he meant Budweiser, the alleged King of Beers. In which case, you win twice. But I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.)

In any case, CUT IT OUT before I'm forced to Beatitude Teh Cr@p outta ya!

Hi Joy

Just getting caught up with you. Congrats on the nice 5k on what sounds like a beautiful course. Great luck at Richmond. It is an amazing course and where I got my PR back in '08. Take care of that body in the meantime and you will have a great day.
